The fundamental mission of the Xuanfa Five Vidyas University (XFVU) is to enable students to gain prajna (transcendental wisdom) and develop their bodhichitta (all encompassing compassion) and prepare to become Dharma Masters. 宣法五明大學(英文縮寫XFVU)的根本使命是使學生獲得般若(超常智慧)和開發他們的菩提心(無所不容的慈悲)並為成為法師作準備。
This mission is to be accomplished by deepening the student’s appreciation and understanding of the precious dharma brought to this world by Shakyamuni Buddha and his teacher, Dorje Chang Buddha, and as expounded in this current era by the third emanation in this world of Dorje Chang Buddha, H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III, through both an on-line distance learning and a residential based seminary program. At Xuanfa Five Vidyas University we strive to promote and encourage followers of all sects within Buddhism from the Lesser Vehicle, Mahayana, or Vajrayana traditions as well as non-Buddhists who sincerely cultivate themselves to become more virtuous and holy beings by practicing morality and concentration (meditation) and thus developing their wisdom. 在宣法五明大學，我們致力於提倡和鼓勵佛教所有宗派包括小乘、大乘、金剛乘的教徒以及努力自我修行的非佛教徒通過修習戒和定(禪定)并進而開發智慧成為更高的圣德。
Cultivation & Practice 修行与修法: Cultivation is a term translated from the Chinese term “xiuxing” to explain an essential part of being a Buddhist. It is part of what a practicing Buddhist does. “Xiu” does mean to cultivate or repair, but “xiuxing” means much more in Chinese. It is the art of practicing perfection, to become a Buddha or perfect one. There is no equivalent word in English, but it involves self-reflection on what you do and what you do to other beings, comparing your behavior to that of a Buddha, and vowing to do better until you can become like a Buddha. All of the 84,000 dharma methods of the Buddha are teachings to help us become moral so that we can behave like a Buddha in speech and actions and develop our minds so that we can think like a Buddha and understand the true nature of reality and thus know how to better behave like a Buddha. 修行是學佛的基本內容，也指一個佛教徒的應有行持。“修”的意思是修煉或修正，但“修行”有更深的意思。它指的是通過實踐來達到圓滿以成為佛陀或人們所稱的完人。英文中沒有一個与修行完全對應的詞，但意思包括反省自己的所作及其對他人的影響，將自己的行為与佛陀的行為作比較，堅持不斷改進，直至變得像佛一樣。佛陀所傳的八萬四千法門都是為了幫助我們提升道德境界。這樣我們就能在言行上向佛陀看齊并開發我們的心態，最終達到像佛陀一樣思維并理解實相而懂得怎樣更好地像佛陀一樣行持。
Students enrolled in the academic and certificate programs at XFVU are expected to have a daily dharma practice and maintain a journal of the time spent in such practice and their achievements and to share this with their spiritual mentors. Credit can also given for this practice toward either a certificate or a Master’s degree in Buddhist Studies and Practice or Cultivation (Xiuxing). 在宣法五明大學修學位和證書科目的學生每日都要從事禪修并把花在禪修的時間和所得記入日記，并与他們的精神導師一起查閱日記。這個實踐可以獲得修證書或修佛學和實踐或修行的碩士學位的學分。
The Five Vidyas 五明: Vidya is an ancient Sanskrit word that has been incorrectly translated as “area of knowledge” or “science” or “wisdom” but that is not correct. They represent the accomplishments of fully realized beings; they are what Buddhas and Bodhisattvas do. The vidyas of ancient India are divided into the five major vidyas and the five minor vidyas (ten vidyas). 明是一個來源於古梵文的詞，曾被不正確地翻譯為“知識範圍”，“科學”或“智慧”。但這些都不對，明代表完全證道者的成就，也就是佛菩薩作的事物。古印度時的明分為大五明和小五明(共十明)。
A Buddhist academic program in India and later in Tibet was organized around teaching these ten vidyas, with emphasis on the first five. A Buddhist scholar or practitioner would be ranked according to how well he or she manifested these vidyas. 在當時的印度及後來的西藏，佛教徒的學業科目都是圍繞這十明的教授，但以前五明為主。佛教的學者和行者也都以其在這些明上的展示而分高下。
The academic program at XFVU is organized around these five major vidyas: 宣法五明大學的學業科目是圍繞這大五明而組織的。
H= (醫方明) Cikitsvidya–the Vidya of Healing (Changing Anything for the Better, 使任何事物變好)
A=(工巧明) Silpakarmasthanavidya–the Vidya of Craftsmanship (Art and Technology, 藝術和技術)
S= (聲明) Sabdavidya–the Vidya of Sound (Speech and Grammar, Communication, Music, 演講和語法、溝通、音樂)
C= (因明) Hetuvidya–the Vidya of Causality (Cause and Effect or Buddhist Logic, 因果或佛教的邏輯);
I=(內明) Adhyatmavidya–the Vidya of Inner Realization (Enlightenment, Supernormal Powers, 成道、神通).
Most of the curriculum focuses on the last vidya—the Inner Vidya—and includes courses related to the actual sutras of Shakyamuni Buddha, written and recorded discourses by H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III; translations of books by H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III; Commentaries by Indian, Chinese, Tibetan, and Japanese saints; biographies and auto biographies of holy ones; and short-term and long-term retreats. However, courses will also be offered in the other vidyas as well. Students will be expected to show some proficiency in at least three of the vidyas. 大部份的課程專注於最後一明-內明，並包括與釋迦牟尼佛的真實的經藏、書面記錄和錄音的第三世多杰羌佛的開示有關的課程；印度、中國、西藏和日本的聖者的論著；聖德的傳記和自傳；以及短期和長期的閉關。然而，其它明的課程也會被開設。學生會被要求顯示在至少三明的一些精通。
Degrees and Certificates Offered 頒發的學位和證書:
Masters of Buddhist Studies and Practice (MBSP) 佛學和實踐碩士;
Master of Cultivation (MXS-XiuShih) 修行(修士)碩士;
Certificate of Buddhist Studies and Practice (BSP Certificate) 佛學和實踐證書;
Certificate of Cultivation (XS Certificate) 修行證書.

Most of the courses for the MBSP/BSP Certificate can be taken on-line, but the majority of courses for the MXS/XS Certificate must be taken at one of the Holy Vajrasana Temples as part of the residential seminary program that is currently being developed. At least two short-term retreats must be taken for the MBSP/BSP Certificate and a 30 day and a three year plus retreat for the MXS/XS Certificate. 佛學和實踐碩士和佛學和實踐證書的大部份課程可在网上修，但修行(修士)碩士或修行證書的大部份課程要在金剛寶座寺的一處修而作為正在開發的住校修道科目的一部份。佛學和實踐碩士和佛學和實踐證書要求學生選修至少兩次的短期閉關，修行(修士)碩士或修行證書則要求進行一次三十日閉關和一次三年多的閉關。
An acceptable undergraduate degree from a university recognized by the US Department of Education (DOE) will be required to receive either of the Master’s degrees, but not for the certificate programs. The coursework will be essentially the same. Proficiency in a given vidya may be substituted for course requirements upon adequate documentation and evidence that the student understands how his/her work in that area truly meets the meaning of that vidya. Although the courses will be offered mostly in English, every effort will be made to enable Chinese-speaking students to participate. 要獲得任一碩士學位者要擁有美國教育部認可的大學學士學位，證書科目沒有此要求，但課程基本相同。如果有足夠的記錄和證據顯示學生了解他/她在某一領域真正達到某一明的意思，對這一明的精通可取代要求的課程。雖然課程大多以英文開設，我們將盡可能努力以使講中文的學生能夠參加。
Tuition for the degree and certificate programs will be $100 per credit for lay persons and $50 for ordained monastics. Scholarships may be available for monastics. Costs of residential programs will vary depending on location. 學位和證書科目的學費是居士每學分100美元和受過剃度的出家人每學分50美元，出家人可能會有獎學金，住校科目的開銷將因地點而異。
SPECIAL: In order to encourage students to finish their work toward a degree or certificate, a 50% discount will apply for tuition paid during the 2016-2018 academic years. Occasional Student 臨時學生: No undergraduate degree is required to enroll in individual courses. Some courses will be offered in Chinese as well as English. There is no tuition for those not wishing to receive a degree or certificate. - You can help develop the adobe meditation caves and the long-term retreat facilities at the site of the Ancient Buddha Temple in Southern California through your donations and labor in helping build this high desert retreat and seminary.
- You can contribute to the Xuanfa Monastic Fund to help underwrite the cost of monks and nuns participating in the XFVU programs.
- You can enroll in the available classes at XFVU and attend retreats sponsored by the Holy Vajrasana Temple and Retreat Center.
